The road has been reopened

(Clear Creek County, COLO) – Today, June 30, 2026, at approximately 3:15 a.m., the Colorado State Patrol responded to Interstate 70 eastbound near milepost 221, west of Georgetown, for a report of a crash involving a semi.

The initial investigation shows the driver of the Mitsubishi Endeavor was contacted by the Idaho Springs Police Department, in the town of Idaho Springs, for a possible theft BOLO, Be on the Look Out. The driver took off in the Endeavor, fleeing from the officer, and Idaho Springs lost sight of the vehicle.

The driver entered Interstate 70 going westbound in the eastbound lanes of travel. The Clear Creek County Sheriff's Office was responding to assist Idaho Springs when the vehicle almost struck a deputy's vehicle. The Clear Creek County deputies began to pursue, while the vehicle fled at a high rate of speed, and continued traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes.

During the pursuit, the Endeavor sideswiped a Toyota Camry, causing the Camry to crash into a Kenworth Semi hauling a trailer. During the crash, the fuel tank on the semi ruptured, causing diesel fuel to leak. Clear Creek County was able to stop the vehicle after it fled for approximately 20 miles, taking the driver into custody.

The driver of the Endeavor was transported to an area hospital as a precaution. No other injuries were reported by the occupants of the Camry or the Kenworth.

Clear Creek requested that CDOT close the road near the Eisenhower Tunnel due to the pursuit and crash. The road was reopened around 7:30 a.m.
