Colorado State Patrol Assisting Routt County Sheriff's Office in Crash Investigation

Highway 40 is closed for an extended period

(Routt County, Colorado) – This morning, the Colorado State Patrol was notified of a two-vehicle crash in the area of Highway 40 near milepost 103 westbound (near the town of Hayden). This incident originated from an attempted traffic stop by a Routt County Deputy, where the suspect vehicle fled.

Shortly after, the suspect vehicle, a red Mazda 3 that was driven by a 33-year-old male from Craig, Colorado, collided with the front-left side of a silver Ford Explorer that was occupied by four adults. The occupants of the Ford Explorer all suffered minor injuries due to the crash, but were not transported and remained at the scene. The driver of the red Mazda suffered serious bodily injuries and was taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

The Colorado State Patrol will be leading the crash investigation of this incident. The Routt County Sheriff's Office and the Moffat County Sheriff's Office will be investigating other portions of this incident, including the traffic stop, any arrest, and road closures.
