Obituary

In Loving Memory of Mike J. Dutton

Mikey James Dutton, 76, of La Junta, Colorado, passed suddenly into the presence of his Savior on June 28, 2026, in Pueblo West, Colorado. In a way that perfectly reflected the life he lived, he spent his final moments doing what he loved in his retirement, tending to his garden.

Born on April 19, 1950, in La Junta, Colorado, to Joe and Barbara Dutton, Mike spent nearly his entire life rooted in the community he loved. The family farmed during his early years before moving along the Fort Bent Road in La Junta in the 1970s and then added a feedlot and farmed and ranched. The farm and ranch were more than a livelihood. They were where countless memories were made and where Mike poured his heart into the life he loved.

Throughout his life, Mike faithfully served his community in many ways. He worked as a deputy sheriff, served on the La Junta School Board, and was an active member of the Colorado Cattlemen's Association. Whether protecting his neighbors, supporting local education, or advocating for Colorado agriculture, he gave generously of his time and talents.

He shared 46 years of marriage with the love of his life, Denise Kernen Dutton, until her passing.

Mike leaves behind his 2nd wife, Patricia Kruest; his children, Amber (Dean) Thompson, Jeremy (Shelby) Dutton, and Dawn (Cody) Fade; his beloved grandchildren, Maddie and Brooke Thompson, Riggin and Rhett Dutton, Reese (Monty) Coleman, Cheyenne (Cody Lore), Shayleigh, and Shasity Eddy; and one great-granddaughter, Reynie-Jo Lore. He is also survived by his sister, Beth Aldrich.

He was welcomed into Heaven by his beloved late wife, Denise; his parents, Joe and Barbara Dutton, sister, Jo Lynn Peters; and all those who went before him in faith.

Mike will be remembered as a man whose character was forged by the land he worked and the faith he lived. He understood the value of hard work, the importance of keeping your word, and the blessing of serving others. His legacy lives on through the family he loved the community he served, and the example he set for everyone fortunate enough to know him.

A memorial service celebrating Mikey's life will be held on Saturday, July 25, at 10:00 a.m. at River of Life Church in La Junta, Colorado. Family and friends are invited to join in honoring a life well lived and a man whose faith, love, and legacy will continue to live on in all who knew him.
